Sinópsis:

La película nos ubica en un Estados Unidos casi por completo dominado por control informático. Un ataque por parte de unos piratas informáticos

alerta al FBI y decide emprender una cacería para ubicar a los responsables. Así toman a 7 grandes piratas informáticos que pueden ser los responsables, entre ellos Matt Farrell quien es ubicado por el FBI para que el detective de teniente John McClane lo lleve a Washington y sea interrogado. En este punto empiezan los problemas, ya que han ido asesinando uno por uno a los 7 piratas informáticos, que habían cooperado con la red terrorista para que cada uno especializado en su campo pudieran formar todo un plan de ataque. John McClane llega al apartamento de Farrell, quién en ese momento estaba a punto de activar, sin saberlo, los explosivos C-4 secretamente plantados por asesinos en su computadora, infectada por un virus encargado de detonarlos mediante un input desde una tecla del teclado. Tras la interrupción de McClane, Farrell no detona la bomba y, alertados por esto, el grupo de asesinos envíados por Thomas Gabriel, cerebro del plan terrorista, decide ir tras él fallando en su segundo intento de asesinato.
